Hi all, i will complete this Barcelona trip with this last post. I hope the Barcelona posts were not too many for you, but this city offers a lot to see. A lot is actually a small expression for this city. So last stop, it was the one day trip to Montserrat mountain close to Barcelona. It is a unique rock range mountain with unique views and routes. One can walk for days in there. Not to forget, the mountain is studded with numerous small temples which you can reach either by a mountain cable railway or by foot. To the huge monastery at the mountain one reaches by taking the cable car from the stop called Monistrol de Montserrat. I do not really remember the price of the ticket from Barcelona, but I do remember that it is cheaper to buy both ways ticket from Barcelona to Montserrat mountain.
The mountain is Spain’s first National park and the name literally means „saw“ in Catalan. The highest peak of the mountain is Sant Jeroni which is 1,236 m. The mountain is the site of the Benedictine Abbey – Santa Maria de Montserrat.
After visiting the church one can go up this hill you see above and do nice hiking on the mountain’s numerous routes.
The next picture shows the whole complex of buildings from above.
The church, which is the back part of the main building is free to visit. It is a little bit dark and that day many people wanted to pray to the Virgin of Montserrat Sanctuary.
My look was attracted by the numerous night-lights hanging on both left and right sides of the main hall.
If you look a little bit more carefully into those snagged shapes you might be able to liken them into humans.
Ermita de Sant Joan was a hermitage in the rock above this small church, which was used as a retirement place for the abbots of Montserrat Monastery. It existed at the time of Abbot Pedro de Burgos from the year of 1512 to 1536.
From this place, it was said that in clear weather one can see the islands of Majorca and Menorca.
And this is how our trip in Montserrat ended. We would also advise you to prepare almost one whole day when visiting this majestic mountain. Take some food and water. In summer, take sun lotion. Hope you enjoy it the way we did.
The same afternoon was the last day in Barcelona for the two of us, so we decided to have a night walk and make few night landscape photos.
We hope that the posts from Barcelona were interesting and informative for you. Let Barcelona be your next destination 🙂
See you soon for new travel adventures!
