The city was founded<\/span> under the name „Anhialo“<\/span> in the V<\/span> century BC.<\/span> Much of<\/span> its inhabitants were Thracians<\/span>. From<\/span> its inception<\/span> until the<\/span> beginning of the last<\/span> century, it<\/span> is<\/span> one of the most important<\/span> coastal cities<\/span> in the Bulgarian lands<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n The city flourished during the<\/span> Roman rule<\/span>. In<\/span> ancient Anhialo<\/span> Christianity<\/span> penetrated<\/span> at the end<\/span> of I<\/span> century<\/span>. According to<\/span> legend<\/span> St.<\/span> Apostle Andrew<\/span> passed through the Black Sea city on the way to<\/span> Kiev. The city was<\/span> then<\/span> a large administrative<\/span> and<\/span> port center<\/span> within the<\/span> Roman Empire.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Pomorie<\/p><\/div>\n Fishing boats<\/p><\/div>\n In Pomorie one can get a touch of ancient history and feel a modern city atmosphere. The church below is one of the preserved historical sites located in the old part of the city. It was built in XIX century. In English the name of the church is „St. <\/span>Nativity of the Virgin „<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u0426\u044a\u0440\u043a\u0432\u0430\u0442\u0430 \u201e\u0421\u0432. \u0420\u043e\u0436\u0434\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e \u0411\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0447\u043d\u043e\u201c<\/p><\/div>\n <\/p>\n Another very interesting and worth to see sighting site is the Pomorie lake. Pomorie Lake is a coastal lagoon, located north of the town of Pomorie. <\/span>The lake is separated from the sea with natural sand and artificial dike and only in the southern part has a connecting channel, which serves for the inflow and outflow of seawater.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Its area is about 7 – 8,5 km2, length 5-6 km, the width varies from 350 m in the north to 1,6 km in the middle part. <\/span>Its depth is not greater than 1,4 m, and salinity 60-80%. It is u<\/span>sed for the extraction of salt (about 30,000 tons per year) and treatment mud.<\/span><\/p>\n Above the lake passes Via Pontica – one of the largest air passages of migratory birds from all over Europe. <\/span>269 \u200b\u200bdifferent bird species have been observed in the lake area.<\/span><\/p>\n Since 2010 on the south shore of the lake there is a conservation work and visitors center. <\/span>Near the center there is the only for the country Salt Museum.<\/span><\/p>\n In order to protect rare and endangered species and habitats Pomorie Lake and adjacent areas were declared protected area by Bulgarian legislation (2001), a Ramsar site under the Ramsar Convention on the conservation of wetlands and waterfowl and is one of the 10 <\/span>Bulgarian sites in the world list of the Convention.
